The second Chisago Lakes triathlon is history. Sunday, July 29, more than 1500 triathletes were met by a beautiful morning and a very appreciative crowd in Chisago City's Paradise Park, the starting and ending point of the race.

The participants competed in either the "half ironman" or the "sprint" event. The first 50 competitors in the half marathon dove into the placid waters of Chisago Lake shortly after 7 am for a 1.2 mile swim.

Following the swim, they mounted their bikes for a 56 mile tour of southern Chisago County. The course took the bikers north and west to Stacy. From there, they traveled north and east to Almelund. They passed the halfway point a couple of miles north of Wild Mountain before entering Taylors Falls. They passed the 40 mile mark as they headed west to Center City before going to the north end of North Center Lake. Then they biked south and west toward Paradise Park, where they stashed their bikes.

The running course took participants west to downtown Chisago City, three miles south, then three miles east before turning back along the the same path. By the time they re-entered Paradise Park, they'd run 13.1 miles.

The first runner across they finish line was Jeremy Sartain of St. Paul, who covered the distance in 4:06:59 more than six minutes before Coloradan Michael Hagen (4:13:13) arrived. The first area resident to finish was Lakeside School teacher Tom Krenz, who lives in Osceola. Krenz finished in 4:20:21. The last person to finish was 78 year old Melford Opstead, of Big Lake who completed the course at 5:38 pm.

Sarah Mercer of Golden Valley was the first woman to cross the line. She finished in 4:47:23. Kerry Ham, from St. Paul was next in 4:58:30. Jennifer McDonough of Lindstrom was the fastest area woman to finish (6:27:18).

In the sprint (.25 mile swim, 22 mile bike and 3.1 mile run), Marc Ellingson of Waconia finished first overall. He covered the distance in 1:17.16. The first woman to finish was Mary Beth Tuttle of Pine Springs, who who finished in 1:27.
