Although they only suited up 12 players for the season opener, it didn't seem to matter for the Chisago Lakes baseball team as the Iron 12 crushed the Osceola Chieftains 10-0 on Tuesday April 6 at Chisago Lakes. The game was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.
The Wildcats started their scoring binge with two outs in the first inning. Tyler Henderson doubled to the wall in left. Four straight singles by Joey Reed, Bryan Eichten, Travis Ongstad and Jeff Sargeant, along with a couple of errors and a stolen base by Eichten, put the Wildcats up 4-0 after one. In the third, Reed reached on a one-out error. Eichten crushed the first pitch he saw, hitting a high, screaming line drive deep over the fence in straightaway left for the Wildcats' first home run of the year and a 6-0 lead.
In the fourth, Tyler Rivard walked and Kyle Buchanan reached on an error. With two outs, Henderson doubled to deep right center, scoring both runners to increase the Wildcat lead to 8-0. In the fifth, Eichten opened the inning with a single. Ongstad reached on a two-base error and Sargeant bounced a single to right to score both runners and end the game.
Reed was stellar in his first start of the season, striking out eight and allowing just one hit in three innings of work to pick up the win. Ongstad struggled a bit with his control, but came up with some big pitches to get out of a jam and preserve the shutout. Eichten and Sargeant drove in three runs apiece to lead the Wildcat hitters.
The Wildcats host North Suburban Conference power Benilde-St. Margaret's next Tuesday, April 13 at 4:30 p.m. at Chisago Lakes High School.
