The voters on Tuesday this week narrowed down the field of candidates in several state, local and congressional races.

Eighth District Congressman Jim Oberstar easily came through the primary defeating his Democrat challenger who got 518 votes to 3,223 for Oberstar. Lindstrom resident Chip Cravaack is the endorsed GOP candidate for the seat.

The Minnesota House Dist. 17B seat had a GOP primary race on Tuesday's ballot and the party-endorsed candidate Bob Barrett defeated Sheldon Anderson 1,916 votes to 611.

In the Chisago County sheriff race Rick Duncan and Karl Schreck will square off in November's balloting. There were three sheriff candidates on Tuesday's ballot and Duncan came through with 2,939, Schreck got 2,280. Mark Osland will not continue on, he got 1,142 votes. Sheriff Todd Rivard is retiring at the end of his term.

The District 2 seat for the county board which is basically a rectangular, area north of Hwy. 95 in North Branch all the way to the east side of the county, and down to the Lent Township border; had three candidates in the primary. Warren Nelson got the least number of votes and is not moving on to the fall general election. Nelson got 161.

Incumbent Board Chair Rick Greene received 587 and challenger Katherine Johnson got 465 votes.

The only city in Chisago County presenting a primary ballot was North Branch. Mayor Amy Oehlers won the most votes to move on to the fall elections with 444. Her opponent will be John vonLange with 348 votes. Kirsten Kennedy got 221 and was eliminated.

For council the top vote getters were Kathy Blomquist with 423 and Adam Anderson with 437. Next was Ronald Lindquist 360, John Philipsen 281 and Kevin Orf got 195.

In Chisago County the governor ticket of choice was Mark Dayton, running in a three-way primary for the Democrats. Dayton got 1,787. Margaret Anderson-Kelliher got the next highest vote total here with 1,309.

Primary vote totals were just about evenly split between the GOP and the Democrats.

According to tallies from the county auditor's office there were 2,762 votes cast on the Republican side and 3,873 cast in Democrat races. Independents numbered 161 and 35 ballots "crossed party lines" and didn't count.

There are 31,019 registered voters in the county and a total of 6,854 voted Tuesday.
