According to various reports the helicopter was carrying a team performing a night raid in Wardak Province, about 60 miles outside of Kabul. It was struck by a rocket propelled grenade.
The deaths are the worst single loss for U.S. forces since the war began. NATO was working to recover the helicopter debris and family members of the victims have not had an opportunity to claim their loved ones or make arrangements.
