Thank you to all the people who came out and honored Nick Spehar as he was brought back to our area. I can't find the right words to explain all of the emotions myself and the crowds were feeling.

It is with the highest regard and the saddest of hearts that we as a community will have our chance to say goodbye to a hero today (Thursday). The visitation will be held at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Lindstrom from 4-8 pm. Nick's funeral will be at the St. Paul Cathedral on Friday.

It takes a brave person to enlist and protect our country. We as a community lost one of the very best. Thank you Nick.

Thanks to the Almelund Threshing Show committee for another wonderful event. Usually when you think Threshing Show, you associate scorching high temps mixed in with some serious thunderstorms. Other than a little rain Saturday afternoon, the weather was perfect. You could see what the weather does for crowd numbers as the show seemed busier than I can ever remember.

It is an event like no other in the sense that you literally step back in time. Even the grounds make you feel like you are on a 1950's Minnesota farm. Couple that with malts that are second to none and a beer garden, it is like a mini paradise.

The Chisago Lakes Sportsmen's Club held their annual picnic last weekend as well. I was unable to attend, but looking at the photos, it looks like their numbers were up as well.

The picnic gives door prizes away all afternoon long, and some are quite lavish. The bike give away is always the highlight of the picnic and this year something really neat happened. James Lowe Jr. won the boys bike and as it turns out Gavin Hutchinson won the girls bike. As Gavin and his parents were walking out with his new bike, he says to his parents "I already have a nice bike, why don't we give it to someone who really wants it?" Little Gavin then proceeded to give the bike to a very grateful little girl. Kind of warms the heart don't you think?

I never like to say that summer is coming to a close, but Ki Chi Saga Days is usually a tell tale sign. One of the last big city celebrations is taking place this weekend in Chisago City. Ki Chi Saga Days has been around forever, and somehow it keeps getting bigger and better.

If you are into garage sales, this is one of the biggest in Chisago County. Basically everywhere you look, someone is holding a garage sale. The RiverBank is inviting everyone for their annual community picnic Thursday night from 5 to 7 p.m.

Friday, Frankies is holding their ever-popular bass tournament which also features family events and root beer floats. Friday evening, bring your buckets and shovels for the sand castle contest held at Paradise Beach. Stick around for an outdoor movie "How to train your dragon".

Saturday begins the day with the annual 5K-15K run/walk. The race begins and ends at Zion Lutheran Church on Old Towne Road. At 9 a.m. the clues for Moberg's Hidden Horn will be posted at city hall. There will be inflatable's for the kids to climb and jump on located next to Family Dollar. At 10 a.m., grab your kids and their fishing poles for Frankie's kids fishing tournamnet, also held at Paradise Beach. There is a classic car show held at Lakeside Elementary School that begins at 10:30 a.m.

The crowning of the 2011 Little Miss Ki Chi Saga will take place in Moberg Park at noon. Moberg Park will be filled with food vendors and crafters as well. There is a really neat family friendly guided bike tour around Chisago City at 3 p.m., but you are asked to pre-register by calling Judy at 651-257-1833. The annual skateboard competition which always draws tons of spectators and participants, begins at 3 p.m.

Saturday at 7:30 is the first showing of "The Ghost of Camp Ojiketa" which is held on the grounds of Ojiketa in Strom Hall. If you were missing fireworks last year, don't worry, they are back. Saturday night beginning at dusk, a fireworks show will be set off from the beach of Paradise Park. Frankie's is inviting everyone to their street dance Saturday night. The Kurt Jorgenson Band will be playing and the best part...it's free.

Sunday has more of the same with entertainment in Moberg Park followed by the Grand Day Parade which winds its way north on Old Towne Road beginning at Zion Lutheran Church. The parade begins at 2 p.m.

If you missed "The Ghost of Camp Ojiketa" on Saturday night, don't worry, it will have a second showing Sunday evening at 7:30. You are encouraged to purchase your tickets ahead of time at Chisago Drug.

The Chisago Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for a few more teams to round out their 2011 Golf Tournament. The tournament takes place on September 1 at the Chisago Lakes Golf Estates. I have golfed in it many times, and I can vouch that it is a great time had by all. Please call the chamber at 651-257-1177 to register.
