Throughout the month of December the students of Chisago Lakes Middle School were read aloud the nonfiction book, Candy Bomber by Michael O'Tunnell. In this book the author tells an inspring take of the Berlin Airlift's "Chocolate Pilot", a story of candy, courage, compassion and hope.
This book brought students and staff together in conversations of freedom, challenges of giving to those who are less forunate, committing random acts of kindness and thanking those who have done something special for us. Throughout the read aloud students were attentive listeners, were able to make connections with the story and were excited to hear the next chapter. This was a moment where reading was enjoyable, positive and made to be a special experience. It was my hope that this story would motivate students to want to love to read while opening their eyes and hearts to the importance and benefits of giving and sharing what they have with others throughout the holiday season.
Kids thrive on love and attention from their parents and grandparents no matter what their age. I challenge you to take a moment to read to or with, your child or grandchild. Show them that you value reading and the time you spend together.
