Harry Noren

Harry Noren, 91, the "pun king" passed away in his sleep at the Willapa Care Center on June 27 following a battle with declining health.

Harry was born February 12, 1920 on the family farm in Chisago City, Minnesota. Harry was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City. He graduated from Chisago City High School in 1938. Harry farmed until he married Marie Magnuson on August 1, 1946 at which time he and his bride moved to South Bend, WA, where Marie taught grade school. Harry built and finished their home at Eklund Park in 1967 and they resided there until 2002 when they moved into the Alder House Assisted Care facility. They were together for 57 years before Marie's death in April 2004. Alder House truly became their home and Harry a fixture there as he entertained residents, staff, family and visitors. A checker board, a joke and a friendly word were always at hand. Harry was a 64 year member of the South Bend First Lutheran Church, serving in all capacities of service and leadership. Harry worked in the oysters and mills before becoming head maintenance man at the South Bend School District. He retired after 31 years. An avid wood worker and carpenter, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, clamming, traveling, hiking (ascending Mt. Rainier in 1972), painting and puzzles. He also enjoyed the occasional prank and if you knew him for any length of time, you would be a recipient.

Harry is survived by two brothers, Melvin Noren and Gordon Noren and his two children, Jim (Kathy) Noren and Susan Moore. He also has four grandchildren Heather (Jeremy) Thompson, Melissa Shortt, Matthew (Andrea) Noren and Stephani Noren. There are two great grandchildren Tyler and Cowen Thompson and two great grandchildren on the way. Harry was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Harry's family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff at the Alder House for all the care and love they provided for him. His stay with you was wonderful.

Memorial service Saturday, July 9 at South Bend first Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to Luther Community Services Northwest, First Lutheran Endowment Fund, Alder House or the South Bend Faculty Alumni Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are in care of Stoller's Mortuary in Raymond, WA.
