Forest Lake music program alumni and staff participated in making history when Minnesota Brass Drum & Bugle Corp (MBI) of St. Paul, were proclaimed Class A Champions at the all-age 2011 Drum Corps Associates World Championships.

The September 4 event, held in Rochester, NY, marked the first world championship win in the 65 year history of the MBI organization. A roster of 21 corps participated in the preliminary competition where MBI edged out the Reading Buccaneers by .3 with a 97.73 score. MBI won finals with a score of 98.35. Bucs scored 97.45 in finals, ending the PA-based corps six consecutive years as reigning DCA champions.

MBI's stunning production of "Valhalla" depicted the Norse myth of the journey of the Vikings from battlefield to the great Hall of the Slain. MBI's award winning performance also earned DCA top honors in Visual Ensemble, Color Guard, Brass, Music Ensemble, Visual Effect 1 & 2, Music Effect 1 & 2, Overall Effect, Communication 1 (engaging the audience) and Communication 2. Communication is a new category in which a judge is in the stands to determine a group's impact in entertaining the audience.

Forest Lake has strong connections to the award winning Minnesota Brass. FL Ranger Drumline coach, Rebecca Compton-Allen, performs with Minne-Brass, which earned 3rd place in DCA's Mini Corps competition. Coach Nate Wright also coaches MBI's percussion Quad line whose members include FLHS alum, Benjamin Lunn ('11), and Matt Mann, a former Drumline tech. Liz Johnson, both a Drumline alumni and former staff, is a member of MBI's Frontline, along with Zach Johnson and Carlie Boudreau ('10). Both Johnson's are life-long residents of Forest Lake and graduates of St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. A.J. Bohler ('08), performed in MBI's 2008 Brass line, 2009-10 Snare line, and 2011 Bass line. Carissa Olson ('09) is a member of the Brass section, as is Drumline alumni and tuba player Andrew Riley ('11). Cole Hanton, trumpet player, will return to FL Drumline as 2012 senior. Hanton spent the summer of 2011 marching with the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps, Dubuque, IA, giving him the experience needed to learn MBI's drill within three weeks.

Minnesota Brass Drum & Bugle Corp (MBI) of St. Paul is a 501(c)3 with a mission to provide its members with the opportunity to perform in a competitive and entertaining drum and bugle corps through a structured and educational program of marching, music, dance and movement.
