Dorothy Hummel

Dorothy Abbas Hummel was born on August 28, 1914 in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. She moved to St. Paul to become the social maid for Governor Alexander Ramsey’s granddaughters in the Alexander Ramsey House. While working there, she met and married Charles Hummel who was the Ramsey’s granddaughter’s grocery boy. They had one daughter, Kathleen. She worked at Schuneman’s Department Store while her husband served in WWII. Dorothy was employed by 3M (Sun Ray Division) for most of her working years. After retirement she was manager of a women’s department at Van Arsdell’s.

She and Charlie moved to Lindstrom, Minnesota in the late 1970’s to be near their only child, Kathy, and her family. After Charlie’s death in 1990, Dorothy lived in White Bear Lake, Haven Estates in Wyoming, Point Pleasant in Chisago City, and finally, Ecumen North Branch. Dorothy loved to knit, crochet and sew, was an excellent cook and a homemaker and loved to play games and cards with her family. She loved to tell stories, especially about “Yehudi”, a family tale passed down by Pa and Grandma. She loved to sit at the window or outside in the sun and watch activities outside her home. She always looked her best no matter where she went, and was very proud of the fact no one thought she looked 99. Most of all, Dorothy loved spending time with her daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She knew Christ as her Savior and went to be with Him on September 27, 2013 at Ecumen North Branch surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by husband Charles H. Hummel; parents Dick and Grace Abbas; three brothers: Garret, Herman and John; three sisters: Grace Andresen, Delores Stuttleberg, and Jennie Tebben; two brothers-in-law: Wallace Stuttleberg and John Tebben; two sisters-in-law: Bette Abbas and Verna Abbas. Dorothy will be dearly missed by her daughter Kathy Nelson; grandchildren Nikole (Paul) Waddle, Megan (Mark) Becknell, and Josh Nelson; three great grandchildren Jake, Jordan and Mariah Waddle; brother-in-law Andres Andresen; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at the Parmly LifePointes Chapel in Chisago City, Minnesota. Interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
