Marlys is survived by her children: Gary (Joanne), Linda, Gregory, Ann (Darryl), and James (Susan), seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold L. Sackreiter (in 1977) and her sister, Lorraine.
Marlys was born on November 15, 1925 in Beresford, SD. She attended Beresford High School and graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1947 with a degree in Business Education. She taught for a year in Yankton, SD and married her college sweetheart, Harold in 1949. They started their life together in South Dakota and in 1958 moved to Maplewood, MN where Harold worked as treasurer for Minnesota Mutual Life Ins. Co.(Securian) and they raised their five children. Marlys and Harold were married for 26 years.
Marlys was very active at church throughout the years—she taught Sunday School, directed adult, youth and bell choirs, studied with her friends in Ruth Circle and organized countless funeral luncheons. Marlys dedicated many years to her family as a stay-at-home mom. Her children have fond memories of baking cinnamon rolls on Saturday mornings and eating Sunday pot roast dinners together after church (and leftover hash on Monday). Over the years, she introduced many children to the joy of music through piano lessons in her home. After the kids were grown, Marlys worked as a public school substitute teacher and then for 13 years at 3M. Over the years, she knit hundreds of pairs of mittens and scarves to keep local school kids warm. Marlys will be remembered for her quiet presence and great sense of humor. Many will remember her as a gentle woman that never had a bad word to say about anybody.
A celebration of Marlys’ life is scheduled for October 25, 2016 at 11 am at Grace Lutheran Church (94 & White Bear Ave.) with visitation starting at 10am and a reception to follow the service at noon. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Maplewood following the service and lunch. In lieu of flowers, donations may be shared with Grace Lutheran Church, St. Andrew’s Village or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Marlys’ family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at the Arbor at St. Andrew’s Village and Health Partners Hospice for taking such great care of our Mom. Also thanks to special friends Kathy and Joyce for their enduring friendship and faithful visits.
