The month of October is dedicated to celebrate Farm To School programs in Minnesota.  Schools that are part of the effort to connect local food producers with student nutrition programs hold events in October;   and one long-running celebrations takes place at North Branch’s Sunrise River Elementary. Their Farm to School Day is a highlight, during lunch time periods October 12.

Minnesota Department of Agriculture describes the Farm To School effort as a way for ag producers to diversify and also boosts healthy eating habits of youngsters.

The Dept. of Ag first coordinated Farm to School month in 2012.

Students and staff at Sunrise Elementary don their best farmer attire, learn about agriculture and see and taste different types of fruits and vegetables. On one day at  the school  chickens, rabbits, goats and other farm animals are provided locally, for the young students to interact with on the front yard.  Sunrise School also has a student garden.
