November 10, 2019, The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) turned 100 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 83 in Lindstrom is celebrating.

The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919 to support the mission of The American Legion.
Following the formation of The American Legion, several existing women’s organizations wanted to become affiliated with the Legion. Instead of joining with a pre-existing group, the Legion decided to build a new organization from the ground up made up of those most closely associated with the Legion. In less than one year, 1,342 local units of the American Legion Auxiliary were formed in 45 states.

Today, the ALA has nearly 600,000 members and more than 8,000 units nationwide. From helping to draft the GI Bill in 1944 to advocating for veterans on Capitol Hill, The American Legion Family has been instrumental in advancing legislation that improves the quality of life for our nation’s veterans.  Each year, through “Service Not Self” the ALA raises funds for veterans programs, scholarships and contributes millions of hours volunteering for veterans.  ALA members volunteer more than 12 million hours each year valuing an estimated $1.1 billion.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 83 in Lindstrom was established in February of 1921.
Unit 83 participates in many activities including participating in Karl Oskar Days, serving at the Chisago Lakes Community Meal and sponsoring Chisago Lakes High School girls who attend Girls’ State.

In honor of Veterans Day and to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the American Legion Auxiliary, Lindstrom Unit 83 honored veterans at Parmly on the Lake November 16 by serving cake and coffee and playing bingo with residents.

The ALA is as meaningful today as it was in 1919, by honoring those who served in the U.S. Armed Forces through enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families.
