2023 Chisago Chain of Lakes Ice Out

Ice went out on Chisago Chain of lakes Tuesday, April 18.

The average ice out date has been April 14 judging from records kept since 1916. According to the official ice out record keepers, the Dale Fredell family, the earliest ice-out dates have been March 19 in 2012 and 2016 and March 25 1987. The latest ice out was May 4, 1950.

For purposes of the Fredell ice out system— the lakes are considered free of ice when a small fishing boat can navigate from South Center Lake through the Chain to Chisago Lake. Ice out last year was April 20, 2022.
