Shafer Council passes cannabis ordinances; adjusts contested fees
Shafer City Council met December 3 for a regular meeting. All members were present.
The council held an ordinance zoning amendment hearing regarding cannabis ordinances at the beginning of the meeting— which no residents participated in.
Council passed an ordinance regulating cannabis businesses. Council adopted what most municipalities have so far with cannabis regulations as suggested by the state.
The council then passed a fee schedule that included cannabis businesses.
Cannabis micro business with retail endorsement renewal ($1,000), cannabis mezzo business initial registration ($500), cannabis mezzo yearly renewal ($1,000), temporary cannabis event ($375 per event), low potency edible initial retail registration ($125), medical cannabis combo business registration ($500) and medical cannabis combo yearly renewal ($1,000).
Council passed the language unanimously.
The council then agreed to remove personal phone numbers off the city’s website and leave emails as a contact.
The council then heard from resident Jack Danielson who lives on 310th Street. Danielson was there disputing his storm sewer utility fee of $82.28 on his last bill. He was asking why he is being assessed for his entire property which includes acreage.
New city engineer Jake Guzik told the council he had looked into the matter and Danielson was being charged incorrectly. Guzik explained that every home in Shafer is assessed a per unit stormwater fee and Danielson should be paying the same as a home in a development. Guzik told the council Danielson’s bill should be $4.50.
Council agreed and directed city clerk Valerie Fox to adjust accordingly.
Council then had the same discussion with Marilyn Anderson who also lives on 310th Street and adjusted hers to $4.50.
Council adjourned at 6:17 p.m.
