While most people have enjoyed the unseasonably warm temperatures this winter, cold weather lovers and in particular alpine skiers, have been on the outs.
The Chisago Lakes boys and girls alpine ski teams have gotten their full schedule in, but it’s been tough with the courses wet and heavy at times.
The boys’ team finished fifth in the Northwest Suburban Conference, but it was an absolute battle until the end, with just one point separating second and fifth. The boys finished with 52 accumulated points while Spring Lake Park and Anoka tied for second with 53. Blaine took the top spot with 62 points.
On the girls’ side, CL took fourth place, just one point out of the top three. The Wildcats had 47 points and Anoka had 48. Blaine also won the girls’ title with 60 points.
For the girls, Anna Dahl was the top skier, and she fell just shy of winning the individual conference championship. She was neck-and-neck with Sydney Kalina of Blaine all season, but Kalina got her by three points 397-394.
Maren Dahl had a great year for the girls, as well, winning two events and finishing second in another, but a fall in one meet cost her a shot at the conference crown. She still managed to finish fifth with 384 points.
Ruby Fasbender, Lily Hubbard, Aisha Roche, Anna Hageman and Ilsa Heinecke also contributed some good team scores throughout the year, as well as Celia Erhardt, Reese Blum, Kaylin Zerwas and Gretta Rivard.
On the boys’ side, Sverre Dahle was the top finisher for the Wildcats. He came in 11th place and had two top 10 finishes on the year. Orval Cyr wasn’t far behind, finishing in 15th place. He also had two great finishes on the year, with a second and a fifth, but had some slides in the other three meets, causing him to slip to 15th.
Rhett Reed finished in 20th place overall and stayed consistently in the top 20-25 all season.
Martin Cyr, Joe Froberg, Aaron Brink, Alex Litterer, EJ Nielsen and Jackson Bjorklund all had nice contributing seasons as well. Martin Cyr was elite when he stayed up, with two top five finishes. But, he missed a meet, had two falls in another and a DQ in a third.
Sections will now take place Tuesday, February 6 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik. The Wildcats’ absolutely have the talent to get some skiers to the state tournament, it will only be a matter of keeping their runs clean and their skis pointed in the right direction.
