Shafer Council removes two residents for multiple committee absences
Shafer City Council met February 6 for a regular meeting.
In new business, the council passed a resolution accepting a donation from the fire relief gambling fund in the amount of $524.11.
The council then passed a resolution appointing election judges Patty Mattson, Patti Kowalski, Nancy Grossman, Marilyn Anderson and Joan Ciesler as head judge.
The council then discussed Scott VanRuden’s absences from the Parks, EDA and Planning Commision. City ordinance states the missing of three meetings constitutes a vacancy. The council passed unanimously to remove VanRuden from the three committees.
The council then discussed Terry Smith being absent from committee meetings of Parks, Events and Planning Commission. The council agreed to remove Smith from these committees.
In the engineer’s report, city engineer Lucas Jones updated the council on the lead service line cataloging. Jones said the city submitted the scope of work to be performed which included efforts to enter homes to review the service pipe to the meter or allow residents to submit their own inspection report. Utilizing the staffing categories and bill rates provided by the state Department of Health, the not-to-exceed work plan totaled 423 hours and $61,941.20, of which the City is not required to provide any matching funds. Jones said the city is awaiting a response from MDH.
In public works, maintenance supervisor Dan Cooper told the council he would like to take part in the Accelerated Leadership program. The program covers a wide range of topics such as communication, emotional intelligence, time management, and coaching. It is designed to be accessible to participants from various geographical locations who want to develop their leadership skills. The program is delivered through a combination of lectures, case studies, group discussions, and interactive activities. The council unanimously approved the fee of $899 for Cooper’s application.
In the clerk’s report, city clerk Valerie Fox told the council 86 late notices were mailed out for water bills.
