Julie Holmquist
Julie Ann (Ofelt) Holmquist passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the age of 72. She leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and compassion that touched the lives of many.
Julie was born on July 21, 1951, to Rev. William and Evelyn Ofelt in Crosby, MN. The family later settled in Chisago City. After graduating from Gustavus Adolphus College, where she majored in art education, Julie crossed paths with her high school classmate, Kim Holmquist, and they fell in love and married on August 7, 1976. Julie and Kim later welcomed their children into the world: Kjirsten (Everling), William, and Ryan.
Through her artwork, she made the world around her more beautiful. Over the years, Julie pursued a variety of endeavors, including teaching art, running her own wallpapering business, serving as the dedicated church secretary at Zion, and making a positive impact as a volunteer coordinator for Thrivent Financial. In everything she did, Julie's love and compassion shone through, with her family always being her greatest pride and joy.
Julie's artistic talents were evident in her painting, decorating, gardening, and culinary skills. Her home was always warm and inviting, and she took pride in hosting friends and family. She generously shared her love for all things Swedish by volunteering at the American Swedish Institute and more recently at the Gammelgården Museum and Gift Shop. Julie's deep and unwavering faith was a guiding force in her life, sustaining her during both joyful and challenging times. As she rests in Jesus' embrace, her family finds comfort knowing that her legacy of faith and love lives on.
Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. William and Evelyn Ofelt, her sister Carol (Duerr), and her father- and mother-in-law, Grant and Elouise Holmquist. She is survived by her devoted husband, Kim, and her loving children and their families: Kjirsten and Douglas Everling (children Soren and Sylvie), William and Anne Holmquist (children Luke, Lauren, and Jack), and Ryan and Kaitlyn Holmquist (daughter Evelyn).
A celebration to honor Julie’s life will take place Friday, March 1, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chisago City (28005 Old Towne Road, Chisago City). The visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m. Luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in honor of Julie.
Julie's bright spirit and unwavering love will be greatly missed, but her influence will continue to shine brightly in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her soul rest with Jesus in eternal peace.
