A report of an intoxicated person armed with a handgun in the area of Elm Street and Third Avenue in North Branch ended with the suspect fatally wounded by one of two responding officers.
The victim is female, but no age or identity is being released by authorities at this time. The officers involved are not yet identified.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is putting the facts together and will review body worn camera footage provided by North Branch and release additional details later.
The incident started about 9 p.m. Thursday night June 27. The subject was reported as acting “suicidal” authorities state, and was located in possession of a firearm and believed to be intoxicated. One responding officer fired pepperballs or non-lethal ammunition to subdue the suspect and the second officer discharged a department firearm, the type also was not identified.
North Branch Chief Dan Meyer states in a press release the woman died while officers rendered medical aid. The officers are on critical incident leave.
