Wyoming approves after-the-fact ball practice facility
The Wyoming City Council, minus member Dennis Schilling, sanctioned a conditional use permit for a baseball instructional facility on 250th and Fallbrook, inside of an accessory structure on a residential lot. The building has already been used by its owner, a retired Forest Lake coach, for honing youth ball playing skills. When the city informed Tal Gravelle he needs a permit for a home occupation he applied immediately, council heard.
Wyoming Building Official Fred Weck said the portable outhouse located on the eight acre parcel was re-located so neighbors would not see it. There will be no on-street parking. Weck will monitor the interim use permit conditions and report if they are not being followed.
He added that the applicant is only asking for the permit through 2027 and would need to re-apply.
Council member Ohnstad commented that there are a couple other home occupations located within about a half-mile of this parcel and he would support this. The permit was approved 4-0.
Council has heard a couple complaints about the bright lights on the Gregory Contracting site, on Highway 8, voiced at prior meetings. Weck in his update, told council the stand alone signage lighting will be put on a timer and illuminated hours curtailed there. A neighbor who had suggested Weck come at night to his property, to view the effects of the illuminated building, had not yet called to set up an appointment.
Rosenbauer’s building on 260th Street was approved for new siding to replace a damaged area initially, but the whole building will be re-covered to match exterior products. The replacement siding has exposed fasteners which are disallowed in code, but were allowed on a case by case basis supported by findings for this specific application. Council was advised this new product is actually an upgrade in quality and appearance.
~ New police officer Derek Heath took his oath and council observed as his badge was pinned on him by his wife.
Chief Bauer remarked that the department is lucky to have him considering there are about 250 departments advertising for positions in Minnesota right now. Heath has worked as a reserve officer in Wyoming.
~ Wyoming is in need of firefighters and will hold a special information session March 21 at the main fire hall attached to city hall, covering how to become one of the team. Wyoming has a paid on-call system and has space for several additional department members. The info session starts at 6 p.m.
~ City Public Works is looking for two seasonal employees now. The details are in ads at the website or call city hall.
~ The council added a work session to the hours before the regular council meeting March 19. Council will convene at 5:30 p.m. The agenda will include an update from County Engineer Joe Triplett on upcoming highway work and the progress in the planning concepts being studied for west of the freeway, off #22 will be reviewed.
