Shafer City Council gets status report on fire site
Shafer City council met December 16 for a regular meeting. Mayor Paula Hanson was absent.
With a light agenda, the council quickly approved the appointment of resident Joe Bohn to the EDA and to the parks commission. Council then approved the appointment of resident Nelce Sluka to the EDA.
Acting Mayor Nick Brehm then gave the council an update on the Mithun property that burned almost a year ago. Brehm, who sits on the Joint Fire Department Powers committee, told the council the property is officially the Fire Departments. Clean up was scheduled in the near future, but Brehm told council the original bidder submitted a new bid that is almost double of the original. Brehm said the Fire Department got new bids and Gustafson excavating was the low bidder. Gustafson is the company that cleared the Springs Inn property in Taylors Falls. Brehm said the MPCA is requiring Gustafson to take a fire/asbestos certification class prior to clean up which Brehm said they are currently taking. Clean up of the property is scheduled for early February. Maintenance supervisor Brad Swenson will have to be on site during the clean up.
In the public works report, Swenson told the council the lights are up and working at the ice rink in Shafer Meadows. Ice has been made and they are in the process of smoothing.
Brehm then asked Swenson about the undergrounding for Frontier in the city. Brehm has fielded complaints about how messy the work is and standing water being encountered in intersections. Swenson told the council a sub contractor is doing the work and that any and all complaints should be directed to Frontier.
City clerk Valerie Fox told the council the city has received the October County tax distribution for $259,863. Fox also noted the two remaining delinquent water bill properties have paid their bills.
Council adjourned at 6:11pm.
