Sheriff’s officials have confirmed that a woman died, apparently in the fire that consumed a multi-unit building on Redwing Avenue in Shafer, Sunday, February 2.  The unidentified female, approximately 60 years old, was recovered  at the scene and her name is being withheld until relatives can be notified.

The calls started arriving at the 9-1-1 center about 10 p.m. Sunday night reporting smoke and flames from the area of the historic structure on the middle-north end of Shafer.  The sheriff said seven departments were dispatched, along with Lakes Region EMS. Firefighters were at the scene within five minutes. Residents from the six-unit complex had been accounted for except the victim.

The state fire marshal has been called to investigate, and is being assisted by sheriff investigators and Shafer Fire Department.  No cause has been announced.
