Chisago Lakes School District opened up enrollment a few weeks ago for a new distance education opportunity, dubbed Wildcat Academy, and the roll was to be close to being finalized by the end of May.  The district reports 20 students have signed up for the first session this fall.   Director of Teaching and Learning Sarah Schmidt said any families who may still be considering remote classes for students in grades 9 to 12 can still contact her.  The e-mail is [email protected] or call 651-213-2005.

Wildcat Academy begins in September.  Students in Minnesota participate in remote classes tuition free.  They have the same opportunity as in-school pupils to participate in activities and sports and will earn a Chisago Lakes diploma upon successful graduation.

The school board supported pursuing the remote learning (internet) program partly based on information unearthed during the survey of district families, done in conjunction with last month’s referendum.  District officials and the school board felt the interest identified in remote classes was strong enough to justify initiating online classes.

Julie Frawley,  a long-time Chisago Lakes math instructor, was hired to be Wildcat Academy Coordinator.  

Schmidt, who is the District Director of Teaching and Learning, told the Press Frawley has experience not only with being an online educator but as a parent of a pupil participating in remote classes.  Frawley has also been an administrator for St. Croix River Education District academic services.

“We’re excited to bring Wildcat academy to families that are looking for a different, more flexible option,” Schmidt added.
