Felony charges filed in Nessel Township crash that left one child dead and six others injured
Felony charges have been filed in connection with a fatal minivan and passenger car crash Friday, March 14 about 6:18 p.m. in Nessel Township, in the north end of Chisago County.
One child, Anthony Sobaski, 4, passed away nearly a week after the crash, according to authorities. Others suffered injuries such as a broken foot, broken tibia, cuts and bruises.
Sobaski was found in a child seat in a Chevrolet Cruze behind the driver and was unresponsive with no detectable pulse. He was initially thought to have suffered traumatic brain injuries and chest compressions were started at the scene. He was airlifted to Gillette Children's Hospital.
The other child, age 3, found in a rear child seat on the passenger side of the Chevrolet Cruze, went by ground ambulance to be treated for a broken collarbone.
Cruze driver Ashlee Rose Klapperick, 36, was charged with six counts of criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm. She sustained the least serious injuries of the seven parties in the two vehicles.
Klapperick reportedly told a deputy she lives in Mora, but her identification showed a Coon Rapids address.
The minivan driver, who was not named in the report, was southbound on Rush Lake Trail near Belle Isle and told law enforcement she tried to avoid the Chevrolet when it crossed into her lane, but they collided anyway. A witness in a car well behind the minivan, concurred with that description, according to the preliminary interviews.
There was a glass pipe allegedly found in the Cruze along with a “tin” containing a substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. Further analysis will be done on the substance.
Klapperick had a preliminary hearing in Center City (by internet) and is due in court for an evidentiary hearing April 7. The two youths in her vehicle will be placed in Pine County child protective services. She must not enter a bar or liquor store and will agree to random testing for any substance use, and must not have any contact with the others involved.
