Summer is not over (it can’t be)
I can not believe the kids are back in school. It seems like yesterday when we saw the last group of kids walking to the Dairy Queen to celebrate school being over with. This summer has absolutely flown by and now the weather geniuses are forecasting high temps in the 50’s. Please, please bring back the sunny 80 degree temperatures - I am not done yet.
We still have a couple of fun celebrations to take in this summer/fall. Shafer Days will take place September 12 and 13. Please see page 9 for all the details. Please plan on visiting Shafer Days this year, they have changed some events around and it promises to be fun for everyone.
Also still to come on the calendar is the Apple Fest. Held in Almelund this year’s festival will be September 21 (Sunday) from 11am-4pm. See page 13 for all the details.
I have been dedicating a lot of my time lately to fixing up a dilapidated room in our home.
We have managed to remodel most of the rooms in our home which we have lived at for three years now. But this one room has been a sore subject. It’s a room that we rarely (never) use so I have always just pushed it to the “Out of sight, out of mind” category. The time came to do something about the room, so off I went, to Menards, to Home Depot, time and time again. I think this was the fourth weekend dedicated to just that room, and Sunday evening I took a hard look at the fruits of my labor. The room was an absolute messy disaster and I had to squint my eyes to try and see the vision I had for it.
One person is happy I took on this project - no not my wife, my chiropractor. He is the one you see driving around town in a shiny new sports car.
I get asked from time to time why we don’t cover this or that event. I totally get the line of questioning and the truth is there are a few reasons we don’t. The first and most glaring reason is we are a small newspaper. We have a very small staff which means we can only cover so much. We try to lead social lives away from the paper when we can.
The other reason that most people understand — and some don’t — is that, as a small newspaper, we don’t have corporate money to funnel into our account. If we choose to not cover an event that is a moneymaker, odds are that event or company chose not to advertise in the Press. It sounds selfish, but we have to keep the lights on too.
