Center City man faces felony state tax charges
The sheriff’s office booked a Center City man last week who is alleged to owe over $71,000 in unpaid income tax and penalties. Travis John Burgess, 47, was recently charged with five felony counts of failing to pay income tax and five felony counts for not filing S Corporation tax returns.
Burgess has reportedly told investigators he is not required to pay Minnesota income tax based on his interpretation of federal tax code.
Burgess allegedly earned sufficient income from Construction Aria between 2019 to 2023 requiring him to file and pay tax in Minnesota. His next court date was not immediately available.
The Department of Revenue states Burgess is aware of obligations via notices and letters sent and numerous direct communications. He was also convicted of tax crimes in 2011.
The Department of Revenue reminds readers there is a tip line to call for notifying authorities of anyone who is suspected of violating tax laws, 651-297-5195 or go to the department by email at [email protected] and leave information. Tip sources can remain anonymous.
