Fleeing suspect drives into river, drowns
A Rush City resident drove his vehicle into the St Croix River while allegedly fleeing pursuing deputies, attempting to pull him over on a warrant for his arrest The pursuit began about about 6 p.m. Thursday August 6.
The sheriff’s office reports the suspect was spotted swimming away from the vehicle in the river, off the boat ramp at the Railroad Bridge Landing, at River Road.
They lost sight of him as he went underwater. Responders worked until 9 p.m., when they located the deceased male, identified as 55-year-old Matthew Norman.
Departments who assisted in the recovery included the national park service, MN DNR, Almelund, Lindstrom, Chisago City and Stacy firefighter first responders, and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s office.
