What would you do if you were an uninvolved passer-by who encountered a man holding a hammer who is presumably assaulting a female,  who you obsere bleeding from obvious head trauma?  If you are the type of person who would intervene, take control of the weapon and confront the apparent assailant to aid the victim— you share something with Leo Lyons.  The Amazon delivery service partner had a moment in the community’s embrace as he accepted the City of Wyoming’s Public Safety Lifesaving Medal from city officials August 18.  (See photo.)

Lyons was also nominated for his truck company’s “Extra Mile Award” according to an Amazon spokesperson.  The company he drives for, 3 Kings Express,  presented him with the award.  

While making Heims Lake neighborhood deliveries, last May 11, Lyons chose to insert himself into a disorderly situation coming to the aid of a victim in an on-going assault.

Public Safety Director Neil Bauer says Lyons “...acted on the immediate danger he perceived and entered the residence” on Heims Lake Court where the incident was happening. Lyons ordered the assailant to drop the hammer, then notified emergency services and stayed on scene until personnel arrived.  The suspect, who is the victim’s spouse, entered a guilty plea recently to attempted murder and faces sentencing later next month in Center City District Court.  

Bauer notes Lyons exhibited, “courage, compassion and sound judgment under circumstances in which hesitation could have resulted in the victim’s death.”

The Amazon spokesperson agreed, stating that “Amazon delivery service partners and their drivers are a constant presence in the communities they serve. Leo’s quick thinking and courage led to a hopeful outcome for the victim and we recognize how differently this situation could have unfolded.”

The Wyoming city council (see photo) presented Lyons with a plaque and letter of commendation at their regular meeting last week.
