The full Taylors Falls City Council met to organize for the year on Monday night this week and fees were addressed for the first time in a few years. The increases reflect actual costs better, and staff said a couple fees needed to be eliminated for being obsolete or covered by another revenue source.  The full listing is available at city hall.  Fees range from the new $10 license (was $5) to hunt deer in city limits to hundreds of dollars for land use permits.

The vice mayor will remain Council member Lee Samuelson who serves in the absence of Mayor Brandon Weiberg.  Other committee and Board appointments stayed the same.

The mayor had the opportunity to present the St. Croix Stewardship Award to a deserving citizen, JoAnn Kuntemeier.  The awardee also serves as Grand Marshal for the summer Wannigan Days Parade.  She is always willing to pitch in and help out in civic events and serves as chair for the Heritage Preservation Commission, among other contributions. The council unanimously approved a request from Buck Duncan, proprietor of The Bridge, a shop in downtown. He is awaiting his cannabis light manufacture and retailer licensing from the state.  He asked council for an extension to his city-issued Conditional Use Permit (CUP) and to his registration status.  He was planning for the possibility that the license may yet be delayed and not arrive before the year-long city approvals expire in February.

He said there are conditions related to security and transportation he is addressing but he has no concerns the state would deny a license.  Local governing units approve cannabis sites for local compliance and land use approvals and then the state issues the actual license.

And, council has a breakfast session scheduled late this week with state lawmakers who will be representing the city’s request to be empowered to offer a local vote on sales tax.  The city council has identified projects of “regional significance” that would be eligible for spending revenues from a half-cent local option sales tax.
