Annika Hall already set the section record and the school record in the 3200 and the 1600 last year. Hall first went to the state tournament in seventh grade, so this is her fourth year at the state tournament. In the 3200, she finished sixth in 2023, fifth in 2024 and second in 2025. In the 1600, Hall came in tenth in 2023, seventh in 2024 and fourth in 2025. Wildcat head coach Brandy Peterson said “She has been running really well and came back from her injuries in cross country. She has paced herself well and is ready to do great things this weekend.”
Madi Eagle, in her third trip to the state tournament, will go to state in the shot put along with the first and second place finishers, Mari Cooksley and Avery Remitz, because Eagle met the state qualifying standard, which is about 35 feet. Cooksley set the section record. Peterson said, “Avery threw first and threw her best throw of the season and set the pace right there, and the three girls together said, ‘we’re going to do this.’ Mari’s throw over 40 feet earlier this season is the top throw this season in Class AA. Mari was a basketball player and a cross country runner and just started throwing last year. I credit completely her and the throws coaches with all being willing to put in the time and knowledge to get her to where she is right now. And as you can guess, being a thrower and a cross country runner is a rare combination. You have to have abilities and a mindset to go beyond what a lot of kids have.”
Linnea Carlson will go to state in the discus along with first place finisher Eagle because Carlson met the state qualifying standard for the discus. Both Carlson and Eagle went to the state tournament in the discus last year, and this year Eagle set the section record in the discus.
Last week, Will Pearson set the school record in the shot put. At this week’s section championship, Pearson set the school and section record in the discus and will be making his second trip to the state tournament. Peterson said, “He busted out that 170 foot throw on his first throw and had a fantastic series of throws both days.”
Cohen Underhill, going to the state tournament for the second year in a row, also had a great day at sections. Peterson said “he actually had a long jump that would have section record, but the jump did not count because it was wind aided. It was a good day for jumping. He had four jumps over 21 feet and there were five guys who hit state standards.”
Mikenna Fritzke will be making her first trip to the state tournament. Peterson said “High jump and pole vault can be so mentally frustrating, because when that bar comes down your failure is there for everyone to see. So, you really have to be tough mentally and I am unbelievably proud of Mikenna. She has worked her speed more this season and has really gotten stronger and faster and been able to put it to use.” Fritzke’s uncle, Steve Schreiber, holds the boys’ school record in the high jump for Chisago Lakes. He jumped 6’8” to set the record in 2001 and will be at the state tournament to watch her jump.
Peterson said “Mikenna, Annika and Maddie do a great job of supporting each other. Those three sophomores have played sports together for quite some time and it’s really impressive to see them because you’ve got a thrower, a distance runner, and a jumper. They are all so different but have unreal potential and it’s cool to see them bring it out in each other. These are the highest seedings we’ve ever had going into this meet for a number of different athletes. The ones that didn’t make it I was really proud of how they responded. I told them I don’t care if you win or lose as long as you act like a winner. Doing the things you needs to do – the training, the attitude, the respect for yourself and your teammates and your opponents.”
