CL recovers for section win after two conference losses
Big Lake 5, Chisago Lakes 1
The Big Lake Hornets broke open a close game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to beat the Wildcat baseball team 5-1 on Tuesday, April 28 at Big Lake High School. Zander Bleymeyer went the distance for the Wildcats. He allowed just four hits and struck out eight, but five walks led to the Wildcats’ downfall. Four of the five batters who walked for the Hornets scored runs.
With the Wildcats trailing 1-0 in the top of the fifth, Baylor Brown and Nick Bjelland singled with one out. One out later, Carter Anderson lined a single to right to drive in Brown, tying the game at 1-1. Big Lake re-took the lead with a run in hot bottom of the fifth. A Hornet batter singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. After a fly out, a stolen base and a wild pitch put the baserunner on third. The batter walked. A passed ball led to one run, making it 3-1, and the batter walked to put runners on first and second. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position. The next batter lined a single to left to drive in both runners to make it 5-1. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Anderson walked and Cole Stilp singled to put runners on first and second. But Kellen Meissner struck out to end the game.
Becker 13, Chisago Lakes 5
The Becker Bulldogs took advantage of 15 hits, eight walks and four Wildcat errors as the Bulldogs crushed the Wildcats 13-5 on Thursday, April 30 at Pat Collins Field at Chisago Lakes High School. Trailing 11-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded and two outs. Two runs scored when Trent Travis reached on an error. Nick Bjelland singled to reload the bases. Xander Breitenbach ripped a bases clearing double to sinter to make it 11-5. But Baylor Brown stuck out to end the inning. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make the final score 13-5.
Chisago Lakes 13, Rock Ridge 6
Just a day after a blowout loss at home, the Wildcats travelled to Rock Ridge and reversed their fortunes. Cole Stilp went four-for-four with four RBIs to lead the Wildcats to a 13-6 win over the Rock Ridge Wolverines. The Wildcat batters pounded out 15 hits in the game. Kellen Meissner went five innings to pick up the win for the Wildcats. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out four. Colton Horak allowed one run in two innings of relief. He gave up one hit, walked two and struck out two.
In the top of the second, Stilp drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Meissner hit a run scoring single and Carter Anderson scored on a wild pitch to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. The Wildcats added two more in the top of the fourth on a run scoring single by Lucas Weinzetl and a double to right by Trent Travis. The Wolverines tied it up with five runs in the bottom of the inning on two walks, two singles, a double and a triple. But the Wildcats answered right back with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth. Quinn LeVasseur walked to open the inning. Baylor Brown singled and Nick Bjelland was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Anderson singled to drive in one run. Stilp singled to left to drive in two more runs. Meissner was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. Weinzetl hit a sacrifice fly and another run scored on a throwing error, giving the Wildcats a 10-5 lead. The Wildcats added two more on run scoring singles by Stilp and Meissner in the top of the sixth, and LeVasseur drove in the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make it 13-6.
Bulldog Banter
The Wildcats (6-6) will host the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets this afternoon at 5 p.m. at Chisago Lakes High School. Tomorrow, they will head to Zimmerman High School to play the Thunder at 4:30 p.m. The Wildcats will welcome a northern invasion to Pat Collins Field next week. They will host the Cloquet Lumberjacks at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 11, and will face the Duluth Denfeld Hunters at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13.
