Veterans Day was great all around; turkey and bingo - what a combo

I had the absolute pleasure to help serve at the annual Veterans Day Dinner Monday evening at Zion Lutheran Church. I have helped quite a few times but I certainly wasn’t prepared for what I saw.  We (a massive group of wonderful volunteers) served over 430 service men and women and their families.

Slightly tart but delicious

It’s the season of cranberries and a lot of other foods as well. We are approaching Thanksgiving Day and I don’t know about you, but we always have cranberries in some form, mostly whole cran sauce. I’m not going to talk much about the crimson berry as you know what …

Working behind the scenes; chaplains provide important 'ministry of presence'

When your job is to protect and serve, who’s going to be there when you need someone to lean on or help sort out your thoughts?  When you have filled in the last line on yet another senseless fatal vehicle crash report, will there be somebody you can talk to?

Old school site opens to future.....

The site of the Lakeside Elementary School in Chisago City is being cleared.  Demolition began with the newest addition being torn down (light colored annex in upper left) and then the brick portion, which was a full-size school building, as the last part to come down.  The Chisago Lakes District …

Wildcats are heading to state, lots to do this weekend, calling all Vets

Congrats to coach Bill Weiss and his Wildcat Football team for making it to the State Tournament.  These kids have had quite the year with dealing with some major injuries, but still managing to get hot at the right time. The public is invited to come watch the game at …

Is it a yam or a sweet potato?

Is a sweet potato as sweet as a yam? Let’s find out. The true yam is the tuber of a tropical vine and is not related to the sweet potato at all. The darker skinned potato that we find most often in the produce department is often mistakenly called a …

Falloween in Ojiketa Regional Park

Ojiketa Regional Park was host to the annual Falloween Festival.  Put on by Chisago City, the event is a kid friendly Halloween celebration filled with kids, games, trick-or-treating, arts and crafts and a kid-friendly haunted house.

Lions annual pancake breakfast

Chisago Lakes Lions members had to hustle at the annual breakfast at the Chisago Lakes high School Sunday October 27.  A steady stream arrived in search of fresh pancakes, french toast, sausage, and eggs plus to have a look-see at the silent auction items in the school foyer.  Pictured, top …

Lots of fun at Ojiketa, kids shop day, calling all Veterans - please read

This Saturday, the folks at First United Methodist Church in Lindstrom are holding the annual Winter Wonderland Shop Day.  What on earth is that you ask?  It is an awesome place where children are allowed to shop for their parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles in a safe, controlled, beautifully …

The season of pumpkins

We are in the season of pumpkins. Ask any American what to do with a pumpkin and you’ll most likely get one of two answers; make pumpkin pie or a jack-o-lantern. Now there are so many different ways of making use of the great pumpkin. From pies to muffins, cookies, …

CLHS students finish class project in Allemansratt

Students in the Chisago Lakes agri sciences class finished the bridge on the new trail in Allemansratt Park as part of their Forest Resource Management class.  Allemansratt is located in Lindstrom, between North Lindstrom and North Center lakes.

Part science, part brute force, a little art and a dash of improvisation

There were times during a state horseshoe forging competition near Almelund last weekend that you couldn’t tell the men from the horses.  They literally had to lean on each other to make things work; forelegs intertwined with thighs as hands cradling hooves became one. The belly of the horse had …

Lots to do locally before Halloween; Kids Outerwear Fair begins Thurs.

This weekend is the last weekend before Halloween.  There is still plenty of time to enjoy the spirit of Halloween before the big day.  Ojiketa Haunt is in full swing with the 2019 scare campaign.  I am told the crowds have come out in droves to enjoy a local scare …

Squash recipes not to miss

I am talking about winter squash today. They may look weird or scary, but don’t be afraid.  These hard-shelled varieties showing up in stores and farmers’ markets are chock full of vitamins, nutrients and flavor.
