The Jaguars also participated in the Schwan’s USA Cup Weekend Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15. They went 1-2 against teams from Rosemount, South Dakota and Canada.
The Jaguars lost their District game against Coulee Region (LaCrescent, Minnesota and LaCrosse, Wisconsin) 2-1 Saturday evening, so they needed a win against Keliix Sunday to advance to the state tournament. Keliix was the only team to beat the Jaguars during the regular season.
The Jaguars got on the scoreboard first. In the 20th minute, Brian Jones fired a flip throw from the left corner. Chris Golv, standing near the far post, tapped the ball in the net to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.
The Jaguars increased their lead to 2-0 early in the second half. Blane Maher was fouled hard in the Keliix penalty area at the 60 minute mark, and Brady Huber converted the penalty kick to give the Jaguars a two-goal lead.
Keliix pulled within one goal in the 78th minute. Standing near the left post, a Keliix player one-timed in a nice crossing ball from the right goal line. But the Jaguar defense held firm after that, and the Jaguars emerged with a 2-1 victory and a berth in the state tournament.
The four-team U18 Classic 1 level state tournament will be played in a round robin format. The team with the best record after playing all three of the other teams will be the state champion. The Jaguars schedule at the National Sports Center in Blaine is; Friday, July 28, 5 p.m., Field A1 or A2; Saturday, July 29, Field A3 or A4; and Sunday, July 30, Field A3 or A4.
