A breakaway goal in overtime sent the Wildcat girls' hockey team to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Cambridge-Isanti-Mora Bluejackets Tuesday, December 19 at Mora Arena.
The Bluejackets scored the first goal of the game with four minutes to play in the second period. The Wildcats tied it on a power play. Deep in the Bluejacket zone, Rhiannon Sauter took a pass from Abby Olson. Sauter started to skate behind the net, stopped and fired a pass to Morgan Baumgard in the slot. Baumgard ripped the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game at one goal apiece with just eight seconds left in the period.
The score stayed the same through the third period when the Bluejackets scored in overtime to send the Wildcats down to defeat.
"Our whole team backchecked this game," said Wildcat head coach Jason Mahlen. "Our backchecking was better than it had been all year. We moved our feet better and played with a high intensity level. If we can put forth that kind of effort each time we play, we're going to be in a lot of games."
