The Wildcats wrestled Thursday, Friday and Saturday, January 18-20 and emerged victorious in all four duals stretched out over the three days. They won a thriller over Mille Lacs and beat Hinckley-Finlayson comfortably on Thursday, dispatched conference foe Irondale on Friday and pounded an undermanned Cloquet team on Saturday.

CL 39, Mille Lacs 35

Late wins by Jason Schumann (189) and Troy Montague (215) sealed the victory in this exciting match against a tough Mille Lacs team. The Wildcats came out on top 39-35 Thursday, January 18 at Hinckley.

The Wildcats led 24-23 before Cameron Gilliam pinned Brandon Brown to increase the Wildcat lead to 30-23. But, Mike Melter was pinned by his next opponent, Derek Kightlinger and Mille Lacs trailed by just one at 30-29. Then Schumann came in and came up with what Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon described as a "pretty win" over Ian Pratt, 7-4, to put the Wildcats up 33-29. Montague then came up with a big pin over Shane Bresnahan, giving the Wildcats the victory with one match remaining. "This was an exciting win for us," said Frederixon.

CL 43, Hinckley-Finlayson 27

The Wildcats won four out of five individual matchups during the middle of the match and took advantage of a number of forfeits at the heavier weights. Chisago Lakes defeated Hinckley-Finlayson 43-27 Thursday, January 18 at Hinckley.

Trailing 21-3 after the 130-pound match, the Wildcats used pins by John Hogie (135) and Shane Hultman (140) to pull within 21-15. They fell behind 27-15 after Clay Olson (145) was pinned, but Derek Silbernagel's win at 152 and Cameron Gilliam's major decision at 160 cut Hinckley's lead to 27-22. Then came two forfeit wins for the Wildcats before Jimmy Stone squeaked out a 3-2 victory at 215 for his first varsity win. A forfeit in the heavyweight match made the final score Chisago Lakes 43, Hinckley-Finlayson 27.

"Hinckley is a real young team," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon, "but they wrestled us tough. The forfeits enabled us to get a couple of guys in there other than our regulars. Clay Olson came out at 145, acted like he didn't know who his opponent, Eric Nelson, was and got an early takedown. Nelson, a very good wrestler, pinned Clay late in the first period. But Clay certainly wasn't intimidated. And it was really nice to see Jimmy Stone, one of our seniors, get his first varsity win."
