Viking 4x800 relay team sets records, qualifies for State Meet at Hamline
The relay team, seniors Aaron Cedergren, JJ Koerber, Cody Good, and Nick Ramberg, won the race by finishing in 8:01.07. "All four of these guys ran the best splits they have ever run," said Viking head coach Brian Hasleiet. "By doing that, they won the race, ran our school record, ran the Section 7AA record and qualified for the State Meet." The fleet foursome will be running at 9:13 a.m. Saturday, June 9 at Hamline University.
Ramberg also qualified for his second consecutive State Meet in the 800 meter run by recording a 1:57.45 to take second at the section. He will run in the prelims Friday, June 8 (TBD) and, if he qualifies, in the finals Saturday at 11:53 a.m., also at Hamline.
Other Viking boys who did well at sections included junior Jared Grams and freshmen Brian Grand and TJ Leason. Grams took sixth in the 100 and 200 and combined with Leason, Grand and freshman Joe Klun to earn a fifth in the 4x200 relay. Grand placed fifth in the 110 hurdles and sixth in the long jump. Leason took sixth in the high jump.
Freshman Sara Swanson led the Viking girls with a third in the 400 and fourths in 100 and long jump. Swanson also anchored the 4x400 relay team ( Tess Prouty-Kunshier, Sadie Kolke and Miranda Charley) that finished third. Charley was fifth in the 800 and Kristen Robatcek took fifth in the high jump. The Vikings' other fifth place came in the 4x200 relay (Allyssa Houle, Ashley Kroschel, Cathryn Bettendorf, Prouty-Kunshier).
The Vikings also had two sixth place finishes. Ali Zimmerman was sixth in the 1600 and the 4x800 relay team (Briana Berthiaume, Haley Hasleiet, Kendra Norman, Meggie Johnson) finished sixth.
"The boys 4x800 relay was the most exciting race I've ever watched," Hasleiet commented. "Our guys, Grand Rapids and Duluth East all ran stride for stride nearly the whole race until Nick pulled away slowly in the last 200 meters.
"Our guys really competed so well and displayed what great athletes they are and showed their competitive spirit. Over the last couple of years, I've seen all four of these guys run some great races, including being part of winning the Section 7AA team cross country title this past Fall. But, I haven't seen them run any better than they did on Saturday!" the coach added.
