The Wildcat wresting team finished fourteenth out of 16 teams at last weekend's Paul Bunyan Invitational in Brainerd, Minnesota. Jake Nase was the highest finisher for the Wildcats, coming in third place at 215. Dylan Hoyt came in fourth at 285. There were no dual meets in the tournament. The team members competed individually, and team scores were determined by points earned by each wrestler.

"Jake Nase and Dylan Hoyt wrestled really well in finishing third and fourth," said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon. "Jake had a lot of close matches and his only loss was to the eventual champion. And whenever Dylan goes out there he's always wrestling someone bigger than him. He won his first match, and then lost 5-2 in the second to the fifth-ranked heavyweight in AAA, Mark Wychor of Moorhead. Dylan lost the third place match to the kid he had beaten in the first round."

Quade Zupko (112) lost his first match 7-6, which put him in the wrestlebacks. He made it all the way to the consolation semifinals, where he lost to his first round opponent in overtime. Those were Zupko's only two losses for the tournament on his way to fifth place. Mark Sontag (103) had a good day Friday, winning two matches to get into the semifinals. But he ran into some tough competition on Saturday and finished sixth. Travis Kammerer (160) also finished sixth.

"Having Clay Olson wrestle could have added 20 points to our team score," said Frederixon, "but we want to make sure he's healthy before we get him back in there. We've got a ways to go before the section tournament. This tourney was a definite challenge for our wrestlers. In that respect, it was a good tournament."

The Wildcats will wrestle a dual meet tonight at Robbinsdale Cooper at 7p.m. Tomorrow, they'll host the Chisago Lakes Invitational starting at 4p.m. In addition to the Wildcats, participating teams will include Mahtomedi, Rogers, Rush City, Goodhue, North St. Paul, St. Croix Falls and Armstrong.
