He was born February 5, 1926 in Akley, Minnesota to parents Joseph B. and Irene (Secord) Todd. He graduated from Akley High School in 1944 and married Darlene Ellen Hoefs at Crosier Monastery parlors in Onamia, Minnesota on March 6, 1948. Joe worked for the Creamery in Freeman, South Dakota and Chisago City, Minnesota, was a boilerman at Midway Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota and an engineer and boilerman with Chisago Lakes Hospital. He also was fire chief with Chisago City Fire Department and was one of the co-founders of the Chisago Lakes Rescue Squad. Joe was also active with the American Legion Post 272. He served in the US Navy from Feb. 2, 1944 until his honorable discharge on May 29, 1946. Joe was a Radarman third class and served on the USS Rawlins. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Joe is preceded in death by wife Darlene; parents; step-father Alfred Staffenhagen; brothers; Robert, Wesley, Bazil, Neal, Donald, Jack; sisters Floy and Beverly. He is survived by children Sandra Todd, Nancy (Lee) Grimm, Joe Jr. (Margret) Todd and Kevin (Kathie) Todd; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; siblings Orville (Delores) Staffenhagen, Alfred (Fran) Staffenhagen, Karen (Glen) Stiffler and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church and one hour prior to service at the church on Friday. Interment at Chisago Memorial Park in Chisago City.
