The North Branch pole vaulter earned her way to the state tournament with a jump of 10'3" at the Section 7AA meet in Grand Rapids.
From there, she participated in her first ever state tournament with fellow Viking and pole vaulter Ben Besch. Salo, however, fared much better than her teammate.
She cleared 10'6", which was good enough for 12th place in the meet, and good enough for a North Branch school record and personal record for her.
She has all of next year to improve on that jump and improve on her standings in the Minnesota pole vaulting scene.
Nicole Naatjes of Lakeville North won the meet with a jump of 11'9", but she is a senior and will be gone next year for Salo's final year. In fact, seven of the 11 girls that finished in front of Salo were seniors, so that clears the way for her to make plenty of noise next year at state.
