Chisago Lakes 12, Hinckley/Pine City 0 (5 innings)

Cody Bergquist pitched a no-hitter, drove in two runs and scored three as the Wildcat American Legion baseball team crushed Hinckley/Pine City 12-0 Monday, June 20 at Chisago Lakes. Bergquist walked two and struck out nine. One other runner reached base on an error in the fifth inning. The game was shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.

Bergquist didn't allow a baserunner until he walked a batter with two outs in the bottom of the third. He struck out the next batter to end in inning. In the top of the fourth, with the Wildcats leading 6-0, he walked the leadoff hitter. That runner was caught stealing and Bergquist struck out the next two batters to end that inning. For the game, no Pine City runner got past first base.

Bergquist doubled twice in the game and drove in a run each time. Scott Hammer also doubled twice for the Wildcats. Brandon Gorski doubled to right center in the third to drive in two runs.

Mora 8, Chisago Lakes 4

Tyler Henderson pitched a complete game for the Wildcats last week at Mora, but he was outdueled by Mora pitcher Dylan Graves. Graves struck out 17 Wildcats, meaning just four outs were recorded on batted balls during the game. The Wildcats managed to score four runs in the sixth inning to cut the Mora lead to 6-4, but Mora came back with two in the bottom of the six and held the Wildcats scoreless in the top of the seventh for an 8-4 win.

Mora scored once in the second and twice in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Their three run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer, seemingly put the game out of reach with the dominant Graves on the mound. But the Wildcats made it interesting in the top of the sixth.

Jake K. walked to lead off the inning. Cody Bergquist singled. Danny Kimlinger walked with one out to load the bases. Bryan Eichten doubled to the wall in right center field, clearing the bases and pulling the Wildcats within three. With two outs, Brandon Gorski singled to center to score Eichten and cut the lead to 6-4. But the next batter - you guessed it -- struck out and the Wildcat rally ended.

In addition to his huge pile of strikeouts, Graves gave up five hits and walked two. He couldn't throw his off-speed pitches for strikes, so he threw just fastballs for most of the game.

The three errors made by the Wildcats led to a total of four unearned runs for the Mustangs. So, despite Graves' dominance of Wildcat batters for most of the game, Henderson pitched well enough to keep the score even and was hurt by a lack of defensive support.
