She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Sigrid Gerber; son, Gregg H. Johnson; daughter, Gail M. Johnson and brother, Stanley Gerber. Marlys is survived by her husband of 65 years, Howard F. Johnson; son, Kent C. (Janet) Johnson of Deer River and granddaughters, Sarah, Megan and Kate.
Marlys was born to Clarence and Sigrid (Lundberg) Gerber and raised in St. Paul. She graduated from Johnson High School in 1939 and attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter where she met Howard at a freshman dance. She later attended Rasmussen Business College. She married Howard Johnson at Arlington Hills Lutheran Church in St. Paul on January 16, 1946. Marlys worked at St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Co. as well as several dress shops in St. Paul. She loved sewing and doing needlepoint. She was a longtime member of Chisago Lake Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she played piano for the Sunday School program.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Chisago Lake Ev. Lutheran Church in Center City with Rev. Craig Lundstad-Vogt officiating. Music was provided by Marlene Wahlstrom as organist and Keith Carlson as soloist. Arrangements were under the direction of Grandstrand Funeral Home in Lindstrom.
