The Wildcats faced some quality competition in the Roseville Quadrangular last Thursday, February 2 and finished 2-1 in three tight dual meets.

Roseville 37, Chisago Lakes 32
The Wildcats led 22-15 against Roseville after Joe Virga’s pin at 152.  But the Raiders won the next four matches to take an insurmountable 37-22 lead.  Jonah Westbury (220) won by major decision and Chase Kammerer (285) pinned his opponent to make the final score Roseville 37, Chisago Lakes 22.  Several Wildcat regulars took one or more matches off over the course of the evening as they neared their regular season match limits.  Nathan Graeve took advantage of the opportunity to fill in for Kyle Schoenecker at 106 against Roseville, pinning opponent Win Naing Aung in the third period of their match.
The Wildcats won a couple of key matches in the middle of the dual to stay in the hunt.  Quade Zupko won 4-2 over Richard Finken in overtime at 132 to put the Wildcats up 13-12 and Carson Velaski (138) followed Zupko’s triumph with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Andrew Vang to stretch the Wildcat lead to 16-12.  “We had some close matches in this one,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon.  “I thought we would be able to pull it out.  But they outwrestled us at a couple of weights where I thought we were going to be able to pick up some points and that left us with too much ground to make up at the end.”

Sontag was trailing 2-0 in the second period before turning things around on opponent Mina Yacoup for the pin at 3:05 of the match.  “Mark’s win kind of got us going again,” said Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon.

The Wildcats will finish out the regular season tomorrow night in a triangular against Hutchinson and Benilde-St. Margaret’s at Benilde, with the Wildcats and Benilde kicking things off at 5:00 p.m.  If the Wildcats beat Benilde, they will clinch their first conference championship in 22 years.  The Wildcats will field most of their regular lineup against the Red Knights, but will likely sit some regulars against Hutchinson because of match limit issues.  Though the Wildcats are favored to win the dual against the Red Knights, Frederixon isn’t taking anything for granted.  “Benilde has a couple of wrestlers at the lighter weights that are pretty tough.  But I think if we focus on the task at hand, things should work out fine.”
Team section playoffs begin nest Tuesday, February 14 at Milaca High School.  Section seedings have not yet been announced, but the Wildcats will likely wrestle at 7 p.m.  If they will, they will travel to Nashwauk for the section semifinals and finals on Friday, February 17.  Check out mshsl.org for seedings and match times.
