Irene Louise Lindvall died April 5, 2015 at the age of 87.

Irene was born at home with the help of a midwife on, September 24, 1927, in Staples, MN. She was baptized, confirmed and married at Sacred Heart Church. She was the oldest of seven children and grew up on a farm north of Staples. During a time when young women graduating high school were choosing marriage as a first priority, Irene was forward thinking and had the initiative to apply, and had the credentials to be accepted for a nursing scholarship. In 1945, at the age of 18, having lived her entire life on a farm in a small town rural environment (social and economic) she had the courage to board a train by herself with one small suitcase to enter a new, and at that point unknown, culture and environment at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Minneapolis.  She graduated from nursing school with honors, and as she advanced in her nursing career, she seamlessly integrated it with raising her family and contributing to her community -- to the benefit of family, friends, neighbors and their surroundings.

While attending St. Mary’s she met her husband Clarence (Clancy) Lindvall at the Prom Ballroom in Minneapolis. They were married on June 13, 1949. To this marriage five children were born. After living a short time in Bertha, MN, they came to Lindstrom, MN, where Clancy was to become the band director and they established their home in Center City, MN. Irene continued her nursing career for 30 years at Chisago Lakes Hospital. Her colleagues and friends say she was the epitome of a professional nurse, continually mentoring younger nurses through her steady, practical ways. This thoughtful woman always provided the best care for her patients with her beautiful, warm smile and her kind, compassionate, respectful ways. Irene always lived out her Christian faith and values in every situation. She also became a “mother figure” to the younger nurses that worked with her. These friendships continued long after her retirement. In her later years, she continued contributing to her community by volunteering in the emergency room at Fairview Lakes Medical Center, where once again they benefited from her expertise.

Irene has been a member of St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church for 65 years. She was actively involved in the Baby Blanket; helping families in need;  Befrienders; encouraging and comforting the sick and shut-in, attending Bible studies; interacting with believers of all ages; was Pro-life, demonstrating love and concern for the unborn; Prayer Line; as an intercessor for more than 30 years and organizing and facilitating weekly communion services for 25 years at Parmly senior health care facility. She was best known for her inspiration to others, her strong faith and her prayerful life.

Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Tracy (Nanik) Kurpius and her husband of 43 years, Clarence Lindvall. Her sense of humor, quick wit, overwhelming generosity and loyalty will be missed by her six siblings: DeWayne (Buzz), Jim (Sue), Theresa, Tom (Sharon), Connie (John), and Dennis (Annita); five children: Steve (Terree), Kathy, Mary (Bill), Bob (Cindy), and Jeff (Liz); six grandchildren: Tracy, Geli, Cassandra (Juan), Jeremy (Katherine), Marcus (Ashley), Anita (Dean), and seven great-grandchildren: Kalia, Scott, Jada, Carter, Miles, Julian and Baby Burgin as well as many dear friends and extended family.
