Leland Rivard

Leland G. Rivard, age 93, of Taylors Falls passed away peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2018 surrounded by his family.

Leland was born in Taylors Falls on March 14, 1925 to Arthur (AJ) and Lillian (Peltier) Rivard and grew up in Taylors Falls with his four brothers and two sisters. He attended school in Taylors Falls until 1944 when he graduated and was drafted to the Navy during World War II. Leland was deployed in the South Pacific and French Indochina which instilled in him a great bond and duty to country that remained with him his entire life.

Upon his discharge he returned home and on June 6, 1948 he married Delores Sellman.  Their union of 70 years blessed them with five children. Robin (Dick) Garbe, Ross (Michele) Rivard, Lucinda (John) Hering, Tim (Lisa) Rivard, Joel (Roxanne) Rivard, 16 grandchildren, and 26 great grandchildren.

Leland and Delores ran Rivard’s Grocery Store in Taylors Falls for 28 years before building Cherry Hill Meat Processing which he and Delores operated together. Upon selling Cherry Hill, Leland worked for the city of Taylors Falls until his retirement in 1988.  During retirement Leland loved working in his woodshop, traveling with Delores, and spending time in the yard. In addition, he loved wintering in Texas with his friends, just not for too long. Most of all, he loved his family.

He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taylors Falls and was an active member of the VFW and American Legion, marching every Memorial Day until he was no longer able. He served on the Taylors Falls School Board and was a longtime member and supporter of the Fire Department.  Leland had a lifetime commitment to the community and he will be missed by many friends and relatives.  He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 2, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Taylors Falls with Rev. John Drees officiating.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Burial will follow the service at Kahbakong Cemetery in Taylors Falls and a light lunch will be provided afterwards at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Grandstrand Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Lindstrom.  Condolences maybe expressed online at www.grand strandfh.com
