North Branch 7, Brooklyn Center 0
North Branch will have a tough time winning many matches in the very competitive Mississippi 8 Conference this year, but they got a commanding 7-0 win over the Brooklyn Center Centaurs last week.
In singles competition, Wyatt Helberg, Gabe Wurdemann, Drake Mellon and Alex Tribbett all swept their opponents in straight sets.
The same can be said for the doubles teams of Travis Mihajlovich and Ben Rossini, Tyler Schneidwind and Michael Thao and Zack Rustan and Magnus Toussaint. They all won in straight sets, wrapping up the victory for NB.
St. Francis 4, North Branch 3
The Vikings narrowly missed another win when they took on St. Francis on Wednesday, April 26. The match was their fourth in three days for North Branch.
“We always play close matches with St. Francis and this one was as close as they come,” Head Coach Joel Santjer said.
Helberg and Mellon both won in straight sets in singles. Wurdemann and Toussaint both almost earned victories in the other two singles matches, pushing their Saint opponents to three sets before succumbing.
In doubles, the matches were equally as close. Schneidwind and Tribbett won their first set 6-3 before falling 4-6, 4-6 in the next two. Thao and Rustan earned a point at third doubles, but the third doubles match went St. Francis’ way and they escaped with a 4-3 win over North Branch.
“Both doubles teams are starting to find a rhythm, which was sorely lacking from the first couple of matches,” Santjer said after the match. “It's great to see the boys figuring out how to play their positions well and starting to figure out the tactics needed to play great tennis.”
