North Center Lake is loon-friendly and about a dozen volunteers demonstrated they wish to keep it that way, as they took time out of their weekend to construct loon nesting platforms. The structures will be deployed in choice spots where habitat supports the Minnesota State Bird.
You are asked to honor the buoys that mark the sites and give loons their space. Most importantly, added volunteer building project coordinator Scott Weiss, is to avoid creating a wake when you boat nearby. The rule of thumb is keep it calm within 200 feet, he added.
The North and South Center Lakes Association recruited platform builders to pitch in at a worksite on Herman’s Point on North Center, April 13, and 12. The platforms need some finishing touches (grasses and anchor attachment) and will be positioned in coming days, just in time for mating season and nesting that typically gets underway late April, early May.
