Alford plea in Fish Lake fatal shooting
Sentencing will take place January 22, 2025 in connection with an Alford Plea to two felony counts, entered in a plea hearing before Judge Seabrooks II held October 18.
The Alford Plea is acknowledging evidence exists that could result in the defendant being found guilty.
Mike Larry Carda, 40, entered the pleas to second degree murder and second degree attempted murder, associated with the shooting death of a Fish Lake Township woman and for discharging a weapon at a Chisago County Deputy responding to the incident.
According to court documents, a caller Oct. 6, 2023 requested authorities check on the safety of a relative at a house, concerned that an estranged couple there were in the throes of a potentially violent episode. Carda was identified inside the residence as the sheriff’s deputy stated in his report he could hear loud voices and the woman called out to warn of the presence of a firearm. A window was consequently shot at, with the bullet exiting not far from where the deputy had positioned himself. When law enforcement entered the home the victim, 35, was discovered dead of a gunshot wound in the bedroom.
