The Wildcats took their annual trip up to Giants Ridge for sections on Tuesday, February 3 and came away with a boatload of hardware.
The boys qualified as a team, but also earned individual top finishes from Anders Brown and John Frischmon.
On the girls side, Ellie Frischmon qualified for the state tournament and led the girls to a fourth place finish.
In the boys race, Brown won the race for Chisago Lakes. He blasted down the Innsbruck (red) run on his first leg, finishing the course in 36.21 seconds. The time held up as the best on that course throughout the day.
On his second run, Brown aggressively tackled the Helsinki run and put up a 35.15 second run, which was good for second place on that course. The only skier in front of him was Johnathan Thickens of Marshall.
Brown’s combined time of 1:11.36, though, topped Thickens’ combined time of 1:11.62 and gave the Wildcat sophomore the section crown.
Brown will return to the state tournament where he finished eighth last year as an individual. In fact, Brown is the highest returning finisher as the seven who finished in front of him all graduated.
As a team, the ‘Cats had some great times to back up Brown’s winning mark. John Frischmon combined a ninth place finish on the Innsbruck course with an 11th place finish on the Helsinki course to earn a ninth place overall finish. His combined times were 1:13.76
Casey Bennett kept the good times rolling for the ‘Cats when he finished in 17th place overall. His overall time was 1:16.12 after joining his 17th place finish on Innsbruck with his 21st place finish on Helsinki.
Ryan Mower’s 25th place finish was huge for the ‘Cats. He came in 25th on Innsbruck and 29th on Helsinki, which gave him a time of 1:17.79.
The standings at the end came down to just a few points here and there. Forest Lake won the section with 411 points, and Chisago Lakes was just behind with 408 points. Hermantown was sneaking around in third with 401 points.
Assistant Coach Su Leslie praised some of the boys for their effort on the slopes. “Another Frischmon is making his move to the top this year. John Frischmon has really stepped it up for us throughout the year,” she said. “They dominated the Northwest Suburban Conference and they are all skiing great right now.”
Ellie Frischmon is glad to be getting another crack at the state tournament. She took a tumble at last year’s meet, but she has been better than ever this year, and she will be looking for redemption.
Frischmon earned her berth in the state tourney with a second place finish in Section 7. Both of her runs were the second best of the day. On Innsbruck, she finished in 40.08 seconds, less than a second behind Hermantown’s Madison Danielski’s time.
On Helsinki, it was the same story. Frischmon flew down the course in 38.61 seconds, only to be outdone by Danielski’s 38.03.
At the end of the day, Frischmon’s combined time of 1:18.69 put her in second place overall and got her a well-earned berth to the state tournament.
“Ellie is a great team member and individual. She had a couple of glitches during conference racing and still finished at the top,” Leslie explained. “She is a gracious athlete, always cheering for teammates and fellow racers and enjoying every moment.”
Hannah Stec came in second for the Wildcats with a time of 1:26.86, good enough for 28th place.
Mikayla Granfors and Hannah Janzig were the third and fourth skiers to finish for CL. Granfors came in 36th place with a time of 1:28.65 and Janzig came in 38th with a time of 1:30.40.
“This is a great group of student athletes -- we wish them the best of luck!,” Leslie said excitedly. “There are more than 40 Wildcats on the alpine team that made this season the success it was -- they compete and have a great time!”
