Thoughts on seasons

The older I get, the more I realize life’s a collection of seasons. Some short, some long, hard seasons, good seasons and great seasons. As I look back on my six-year season as the Superintendent of the Chisago Lakes Schools, it’s been a great season in my life! For those that know me and have followed my six years here, they might wonder, “Really? You’d call dealing with budgets, a pandemic, dealing with adult problems and political and social unrest a great season?” And, I would respond, with a resounding yes. It’s been a great season in my life, because it’s about the people you meet in every season that make them all great. When it’s a hard season, you remember those who came alongside you, helped, encouraged and supported you. In seasons of rejoicing, there’s those who celebrate with you and are happy for you.

I have met some amazing people during my time in Chisago Lakes. Personally, first and foremost, I’ve gained two sons-in-law and three grandchildren! Professionally, I have had the honor and privilege of serving incredible alongside Board Members, Administrators, Teachers and Support Staff. Partnering with local leaders like Mayors, Council Members, Commissioners, County and City Leaders, Service Organizations leaders and member. It has been a pleasure. I’ve met incredible community members who’ve attended events, engaged in decisions and offered insights and perspectives I needed to hear. Most importantly, I will always remember our bright, talented and energetic students.

In my first months in my new role I was asked to speak at our Veteran’s Day program. I can still remember the courtesy, respect and honor 1,050 high school students showed for that occasion. They have been great all along which is an indication of the incredible families that have raised them right.

One of the incredible people I met at Chisago Lakes was former Superintendent Don Bungum. Don reached out to me immediately when I became Superintendent in 2017 and we’ve been friends ever since. A few years ago Don wondered if we could get some former Superintendents together for a cup of coffee and a picture, so we made it happen. As we gathered, we looked over a plaque in the School Board Room that lists all former Board Members and Superintendents. Don served the Chisago Lakes Schools from 1969-1987 and as we went over the names on the plaque, Don remembered every one that he served with and had a kind word for each. Calm, kind, thoughtful, supportive and strong at the same time - that’s how I’ll remember Don and that’s how I’ll remember the many, many great people I’ve met in Chisago Lakes. It may have been a shorter season, but the memories and relationships will last a lifetime. Best wishes Wildcats, it’s been an honor. And… I’m humbled to have my name on that plaque.
