Shafer City Council met September 3 for a regular meeting.  Council member Nick Brehm was absent.

The meeting opened with the council agreeing to a council meeting date change due to the general election on November 5.  After a brief discussion the council agreed to move the meeting to November 6 at 6 p.m.

The council then passed a resolution adopting election judges which added David Waldoch to the list already approved by council.

Council then discussed its next budget meeting which was agreed upon for September 9.

The council then passed a motion to accept the 2025 Volunteer Fire Association Assistance Matching Grant for the amount of $3,500. The grant is matched by the MN Department of Natural Resources to be used for possible projects such as fire equipment, personal safety equipment, pagers and radios.

In unfinished business, the council discussed potential candidates for city engineering firms. It was agreed the council would choose four of the seven applicants to interview on September 20.  Those chosen were ISG, MSA, Widseth and Bolton & Menk.

In the public works report, maintenance supervisor Dan Cooper gave an update on quotes he has received for a new pickleball court.  Cooper said he received a quote from RE Peterson for the dirt work for $8,000, another from Classy Concrete for $14,500 and another for the surface of the court and installation of the net for $32,550.  Council member Patty Mattson made a motion to move forward but not to exceed $55,000 which passed unanimously.

Cooper then gave an update on the furnace room at city hall. Black mold was found on and near the furnace which was installed in 2016.  Cooper told the council the furnace has been removed to be cleaned, Servpro has abated the room of all mold and ducts have been cleaned and sterilized. Cooper told the council the furnace will be re-installed this week.

Council adjourned at 6:29 p.m.
