Couple booked, released on tax fraud allegations

A self-employed Chisago City couple have been charged after an investigation by the Minnesota Department of Revenue authorities alleged wrongdoing.

Michael James Marx Jr. and Chasteen Marie Marx were charged with illegally stating income on income and property tax forms and owing at least $48,000 in taxes.

The district court had them booked and released last week.

These are felony level offenses and carry maximum penalties of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Their next court appearance is not scheduled yet.

The Marx's allegedly filed tax returns using underreported income for 2018 through 2021, to be eligible for property tax credits.  Their income and expenses were erroneously reported on income tax forms as well, for the same time period, the Department of Revenue alleges.

Many Department of Revenue cases arise from tips provided by the public.
